Swatch's Feel Free
A pond full of rubber duckies, suspended in jelly
There is a watch on my desk right now with eight tiny yellow ducks floating across its face, and it is making me smile.
The Feel Free, reference SUPS100, comes from Swatch’s Puzzle Motion line, a Jelly in Jelly subseries that landed in 2007 and quickly became one a favorite innovation of mine from Swatch. The idea is this: take the transparent plastic-on-plastic construction of Jelly in Jelly, then build in a mechanism where small discs on the dial rotate independently. Every hour, on the hour, those discs line up to complete a picture. You can never quite predict what you’ll see, and the design is always changing. A kaleidoscope you wear on your wrist.
The Feel Free leans into the playfulness the format invites. Transparent blue case, light blue dial, a two-tone blue silicone strap printed with little blue building blocks and yellow pull-along wooden ducks on wheels. The rotating discs each carry a yellow duck head, and they drift around the face, as if the ducks have escaped the strap and gone for a swim. The buckle is transparent blue, the loop is light blue, the whole thing reads like a bathtub during a kid’s bath time, in the best way.
Why this one
Puzzle Motion watches are among the most rewarding Swatches to own, not just collect. They keep moving. The dial is never the same twice in a single day. And because the entire construction is plastic-on-plastic, including the crown and the battery cover, nothing metal touches your skin, which makes them great for anyone with metal sensitivities and also just deeply pleasant to wear in hot weather.
The Feel Free, specifically, is the kind of watch that makes strangers smile. It isn’t trying to be cool. It’s trying to be a small bit of joy on your wrist, and it succeeds.
